Therapeutic ultrasound on the spinal cord accelerates regeneration of the sciatic nerve in rats. Acta Ortop Bras. [online]. 2011; 19(4):213-8. Available from URL: http://www.scielo.br/aob. ABSTRACT Objective: To study the effects of low intensity ultrasound irradiation applied on the spinal cord on the regeneration of the rat’s sciatic nerve after a controlled crush injury, evaluating the functional results of the sciatic functional index as measured on the video recorded images of the foot sole. Methods: Eighteen rats were submitted to a controlled crush injury of the right sciatic nerve and divided into two groups according to the treatment: Group 1 (n=9), simulated irradiation; Group 2 (n=9), effective irradiation. Low-intensity ultrasound irradiation was started on the 7th postoperative day and applied daily for 6 weeks. Images of the animals ́ foot sole were video recorded on a see-through treadmill type walking belt machine at weekly intervals until the 6th week of irradiation and the corresponding sciatic functional index (SFI) was measured with specific software. Results: The SFI during the first and last week of treatment was -59.12 and -12.55 in Group 1, -53.31 and -1.32 in Group 2, indicating a 79% and 97% improvement, respectively, but differences between groups were only significant (p<0.05) during the third week. Conclusion: The authors conclude that low intensity therapeutic ultrasound enhances nerve regeneration, with significance during the 3rd week of treatment. Level of Evidence: Level II, prospective comparative study.

P35: Effect of Hydroalcoholic Extract of Agrimonia eupatoria on Alpha Motoneurons Regeneration of Anterior Spinal Cord after Compression of Sciatic Nerve in Rat
If nerve cells damaged, they cannot be restored by themselves. Agrimonia eupatoria has been used in traditional medicine to heal the wounds and scratch, and dry the scars. Therefore, this herb probably contains compounds with restorative properties. The purpose of this study was to investigate the restorative effect of Agrimonia eupatoria on alpha motor neurons of anterior spinal cord. In this ...

Background: Many people suffer from nerve injury. The time consuming nature of the treatments makes the condition worse. Therefore, finding a way to accelerate the process of nerve repair is very important. Objective: To determine the effect of ultrasound on the acceleration of crushed peripheral nerve regeneration. Methods: The experimental model included crushed rat’s sciatic nerve. 40 rats w...
متن کاملNeuroprotective Effects of Sodium Meta Silicate on Motoneurons of Spinal Cord Ventral Horn In Rats Underwent to Compressived Injury of Sciatic Nerve
Purpose: It has been shown that sodium meta silicate has an antioxidant effects and suppress the production of oxidative enzymes. Since the inflammation phenomena and increase the level of free radicals mostly take part in post-injury neuronal degeneration, the purpose of the present research was to examine weather the antioxidant property of sodium meta silicate can prevent the central degener...

Background: Olfactory ensheathing glia (OEG) has been shown to have a neuroprotective effect after being transplanted in rats with spinal cord injury. This study was conducted to determine the possible beneficial results of olfactory mucosa transplantation (OMT) which is a source of OEG on functional recovery and axonal regeneration after transection of the sciatic nerve. Methods: In this study...
متن کاملNeuroprotective Effects of Aqueous Extract of Achillea Wilhelmsii on Motor Neuron Destruction of Spinal Cord Ventral Horn after Sciatic Nerve Compression in Male Adult Rats
Background & Aims: Peripheral nerve injuries affect both sensory and motor function, resulting in retrograde reaction to neuronal cell bodies in the ventral horn of spinal cord ventral and their destruction. Achillea wilhelmsii is one of the popular medicinal herbs which grow in dry and semitropical areas worldwide. There are several reports indicating the anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, anti...
